Alice Lavender has escaped from her cruel master in England and has immigrated with the her parents, thanks to the Mormons. They sail to the new world and then travel by railroad to the edge of the United States She and her family go by wagon to Salt Lake City, the new Mormon community in the West. She is free at last, or so she thinks, but the elders persuade her to marry an older man where she will be the second wife in a polygamous marriage. The other wife does not want her but can't refuse. Alice will be sealed in a few days for Time and Eternity and she doesn't want to do it, but again she has no choice. She prays for guidance and courage, because this time escape will be impossible.

The author has worked to provide an historical depiction of events in the life of personal ancestors, but has fallen victim to some inaccurate depictions of the time. The story depicts a church wide dependence on polygamy as a status device and elevating principle for qualification of leadership within the early Mormon church. Leadership positions have never been something sought after or campaigned for within the church, and while men were called to take additional wives in to their family, I don't believe it was a general principle that men thought without plural marriages their chances for exhaltation would be limited. I can believe that there may have been a corrupt leader in the local church of the day, I would like to see any historical reference to a situation as described in the book. There is some nice detail included about life in early 1800's England as well as on the plains of the Salt Lake Valley around the 1860's.Product details
